10-18 Encouragement
Psalms 69:32 The humble will see their God at work and be glad. Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged.
A breathless voice called out over the radio, “10-18, 10-18 Ferris Wheel!” Immediately, myself and the other on-duty deputies and reserve deputies started running, biking or driving to the Ferris wheel. We were providing law enforcement at the California Mid-Winter Fair, and one of our own was in trouble.
A 10-18 code means “officer needs assistance.” In this case, a deputy had tried to arrest someone, and a large crowd had gathered around him. 30 to one odds are not good odds! So the deputy keyed his mic and waited. He knew that help was coming. He didn’t see us right away, but he knew we were headed his direction to help him out. Within minutes, a group of armed officers arrived and backed him up. The crowd dispersed as help arrived.
In Psalm 69 David describes a bad time he is going through. People are against him, he is surrounded by accusations and threats. His odds are not good. So he asks God for assistance. And he waits, knowing that God has his back. He didn’t see God at work right away, but he knew God was working. He was encouraged, knowing that God was helping him, even if he couldn’t see it at first.
If you are going through a rough time, take your issues to God. Mind you, it’s not that God was unaware of them, but he wants you to have faith to bring them to him. Then believe, knowing that God is working. Be encouraged, knowing that help is on its way. And help will come. It may come by the problem going away, or it may be a peace that comes to you and gives you strength to endure. Whatever happens, you can be encouraged knowing that God is working on your behalf.
