John 5:6 When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”
In today’s verse Jesus asks a paralyzed man if he would like to get well. It seems like an odd question. Why wouldn’t a guy who had been sick for thirty-eight years want to get up off his mat and walk away? However, instead of answering with a resounding, “Absolutely, heal me,” the man offers excuses why he had never gotten into the waters.
Maybe the man hesitated because healing would bring responsibility. Perhaps the man was so used to being sick he had just given up. The answer could be a few verses later when Jesus encounters the man again and says, John 5:14 “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.”
Following Christ is an all-in kind of life. Wilbur Rees wrote:
I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please. Not enough to explode my soul or disturb my sleep, but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk, or a snooze in the sunshine. I don’t want enough of God to make me love a black man or pick beets with a migrant. I want ecstasy, not transformation. I want warmth of the womb, not a new birth. I want a pound of the Eternal in a paper sack. I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.
What about you? Do you want to be healed? Not just healed physically, but healed spiritually? God doesn’t want just part of you, He wants all of you. You are going to get a lot more than $3 worth of God, but your life will be changed for the better in ways you cannot imagine!
