A High Price
1 Corinthians 7:23 God paid a high price for you, so don’t be enslaved by the world.
In the movie Avengers:Infinity War, Thanos is talking to Gamora about his plans to wipe out half of humanity on earth as he has done on other planets. Gamora is incredulous, and he says something chilling, “A small price to pay for salvation.”
Half of humanity was considered a small price to pay for his ends. He did the math, and half of the people disappearing was nothing to him, a pittance. He was willing to sacrifice us to get what he wanted.
As Paul writes to the church in Corinth about marriage and sexual purity he says that God paid a high price for us. God’s own son came to the earth to live with us and then die for us.
What an amazing contrast between Thanos and Jesus. Thanos was willing to wipe out people for his desire, Jesus was willing to die for his Fathers desire to save us.
When is the last time you thought about the sacrifice and the price paid for your salvation? We couldn’t save ourselves from judgment, so God sent his only son to die for us. He paid the price so we wouldn’t have to.
As we near Easter, let’s keep in mind that our salvation, while free to us, cost Jesus everything.
