Isaiah 55:1 “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink— even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk— it’s all free!
The man had been wandering across the burning desert for days. His water had run out, and he was getting delirious from hunger and thirst. He willed himself to crest just one more sand dune, crawl across one more mesa, to just keep going. As he came over the top of a dune he saw a shimmering oasis right there in the desert! He mustered up his final bit of strength and ran toward the shining pool of cool, clear, water.
He was getting ready to jump into the pool when he heard, “That will be $10 please.”
The man was sure he had heard wrong. “What do you mean $10? I’m about to die from exposure. I don’t have any money with me, just let me jump in!”
“Sorry, sir, If you don’t pay you can’t drink, eat, or swim.” Imagine the disappointment of the dying man. So close to everything he needs, but so far away from getting it.
Today’s verse shows us that God is that oasis in the desert of life. He invites us to eat if we are hungry, to drink if we are thirsty, and live fully. Best of all, it is free! The price for your life has already been paid by Jesus on the cross.
The only thing you bring to your salvation is your sin and brokenness. God provides everything else: forgiveness, peace, joy and eternal life.
So jump on in, it’s free!
