Psalms 70:1-2 Please, God, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. May those who try to kill me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace.
Have you ever just been really ticked off? I mean scratching and clawing at the ground, fists and jaw clenched, steam coming out of your ears upset? I have. Often.
What do you do with that? You feel betrayed, or hurt by something somebody said or did. You know murder is wrong. You do know that, right? So is offering someone free dental work.
King David knew those feelings, too. In fact, he wrote out some of his feelings and put them to music. Today’s verse is one of those songs. They are called imprecatory Psalms, and there are more than a few in the Old Testament.
Scholars have debated the imprecatory psalms, but I have my own theory. I think David was going to his Father and letting God know how hurt he was. David cried out for judgement on those who had hurt him. He prayed fire down on their heads!
Psalm 70 ends with David telling God, Psalms 70:5 You are my helper and my savior; O LORD, do not delay.
He left his pain, anger, and desire for vengeance with God, then went back to praising. Next time you are spitting nails angry, let God know. Then put your trust in him and go back to praise. It worked for David!
