Matthew 27:24
Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!”
Pilate had a chance. He could have released Jesus and been done with it. Yet, for all of his power and standing, Pilate was weak when it counted most.
Pilate had the power to release Jesus, he had the signet ring from Rome.
Pilate had the reason to release Jesus, he found no fault in him.
Pilate had even been warned by his wife to release Jesus.
When push came to shove, Pilate chose the path of least resistance, then made a show of washing his hands to absolve himself of all blame.
Did he, though? History doesn’t record what Pilate thought after Jesus left. I’m sure he told his wife, “Don’t worry, dear, my hands are clean.” But are they?
When you cross your line of right and wrong, when you worry more about crowds than conscience, can you ever be truly clean?
What about us? How many times have we chosen sin over God’s Word?
How many times have we been silent when we should have made a stand for God?
How many times have we tried to wash sin off of our hands, hoping God would accept it?
It’s time to get real about following Christ. Yes, there are going to be uncomfortable times, times when it would be easier to do nothing than it is to do right.
Are your hands clean?
