Bandages In The Lemon Muffins
I took Lanette to the Souplantation for a nice lunch. If you’ve never been to a Souplantation, you don’t know what you are missing. There are more salads than you can even dream up, or you can make your own. Then you get to the different kinds of pasta, chili, soup and baked goods. It was the baked goods that got me in trouble.
I was using the tongs to pick up a blueberry muffin. I love blueberry muffins, and I could hear their siren call while I was wasting my time filling my plate with salad.
I should have prefaced all of this by pointing out that I had a pretty nasty cut on my right index finger. I don’t remember how I cut myself, but I do remember that I was wearing a cloth bandage to cover my boo-boo.
Anyway, back to the muffins. Somehow, as I was reaching with the tongs for my blueberry muffin, the bandage fell off my finger. It could have fallen into the area between the muffin tins. It could have waited to fall off until my hand was over the floor. Nope, not with my luck. It fell off right into the lemon muffins! I was horrified and embarrassed all at the same time.
I nervously waited for the scream of the woman waiting patiently behind me, but it never came. She hadn’t noticed! I was safe. I did what anybody else would have done in that situation.
I hurried back to my table. Lanette could tell something was wrong. Maybe it was the look on my face. Maybe it was the fresh pink wound shining like a spotlight from my index finger. Whatever it was, she knew something was amiss. “What’s wrong?
“I dropped my Band-Aid into the lemon muffins!” I waited for her to… well, I don’t know what I thought she would do. She laughed. Not a giggle, not a chortle, not a little snicker. No, she put her head down, her shoulders shook and she was doing her best not to lose it in public. I could tell she was not going to be any help. So I went back to the muffins on my own.
I nonchalantly sidled myself over to the muffins, trying my best not to look suspicious. Have you ever seen a big guy sidle? It ain’t easy, and it ain’t pretty. When I got to the muffins, I glanced around and used the tongs to trap the Band-Aid against a lemon muffin. It was like some bizarre arcade game. I missed the bandage a couple of times. One time the bandage fell on another muffin, so I put it on my plate, too. By the time I was done I had a plate with three lemon muffins and a bloody bandage. I walked back to my table with a relieved look on my face, a bandage to reapply, and a lot of muffins to eat.
There are times when our lives are thrown off track like that bandage in the lemon muffins. We can panic and freak out, we can look to our friends or family for guidance, but we often feel like we are all alone. We aren’t alone, we can reach out to someone who will always be there. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is there for times of trouble.” I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure that even covers bandages in the lemon muffins!
Never allowed back at Souplantation… Jerry
