2 Samuel 18:33 The king was overcome with emotion. He went up to the room over the gateway and burst into tears. And as he went, he cried, “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son.”
King David’s son, Absolem, had led a revolt against his father. It must have made Thanksgivings awkward, “Can you please pass the mashed potatoes, you usurper of my kingdom?” And you thought you had it rough at family gatherings.
Then Absolem leads his armies against his father, and is killed as part of the battle. When a runner brings David news of Absolem’s death, our verse today chronicles David’s response. Instead of being happy that he won’t have to deal with the rebellion anymore, David’s heart is broken at the death of his son.
How many times has God wept over our petty rebellions against him and his grace? The difference between God and David is that God was able to send someone in our place to die. David wished he could have died instead of Absolem, but God was able to send Jesus for us.
Just like David, God weeps at our rebellion and selfishness. When we sin we don’t just break God’s law, we break God’s heart. So remember that next time you are tempted to rebel and sin. God’s heart is breaking.
