Caught In The Ice
1 Corinthians 10:12
If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.
The story is told of an eagle perched on a block of ice just above Niagara Falls. The swift current carried the ice and its majestic passenger close to the edge of the great precipice. Other birds warned the eagle of the danger ahead. But their words were unheeded. “I have great and powerful wings,” he boasted. “I can fly from my perch at any time.”
Suddenly the edge of the falls was only a few feet away. The eagle spread his powerful wings to mount up over his impending doom only to discover that his claws had become frozen to the block of ice.
It is so easy for us to overestimate our abilities, especially spiritually. God, in his grace, helps us overcome a sin in our lives that almost destroyed us. We think to ourselves, “There, now I am strong, I can’t fail again.”
It is that type of thinking that Paul warns us about in today’s verse. Thank God for his strength and his blessings, but never take them for granted. Instead, guard your heart, lest your strength become a weakness.
There are many castles that seemed impregnable right up until the moment they were overcome by a foe. Don’t let your heart fall by not guarding the victories God has given you!
