Matthew 22:4
“So he sent other servants to tell them, ‘The feast has been prepared. The bulls and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the banquet!’
Philip Yancey told the story of the woman who was getting married and planned a huge wedding banquet. It was going to held at the Hyatt Hotel and cost $13,000. After everything had been planned and paid for the groom dumped her.
When she tried to cancel, she could not get her money back because the food had already been bought. She decided to go ahead with the party. Years before she had gone through a difficult time and had lived in a homeless shelter. Now she would invite the down and outs. For the dinner they served boneless chicken – in honor of the groom. Homeless people were served a fancy meal on fine china with the band playing.
What a picture of what God does! We have no standing to deserve an invitation to God’s banquet and blessings. We have nothing to offer, no way to repay Him. Yet, God invites us to come and dine with him, to enjoy his bounty and his blessings.
A relationship with God is like a banquet, a feast, a huge celebration. Jesus is saying that the kingdom of God is a party. When Jesus talks about the kingdom of God, he talks about a banquet—because a relationship with God is something to celebrate. It is a cause for joy and happiness in our lives. And it is certainly something that we don't want to miss out on.
So come on in! Come to the banquet!
