Hebrews 13:6 So we can say with confidence, “The LORD is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”
When John Chrysostom (ca. 347-407) was brought before the empress Eudoxia, she threatened him with banishment if he insisted on his Christian independence as a preacher.
“You cannot banish me, for this world is my Father’s house.”
“But I will kill you,” said the empress.
“No, you cannot, for my life is hid with Christ in God,” said John.
“I will take away your treasures.”
“No, you cannot, for my treasure is in heaven and my heart is there.”
“But I will drive you away from your friends and you will have no one left.”
“No, you cannot, for I have a Friend in heaven from whom you cannot separate me. I defy you, for there is nothing you can do to harm me.”
Why are we so afraid of people on this earth when Christ is in us? I know folks who are afraid to let on that they are Christians because they are afraid of what people may say or think of them. I know people who are afraid to step out and do what God is calling them to do because the unknown is scary.
Today’s verse tells us to have confidence because we are not alone. God is not only with us, he is our helper.
Think about that! The God of heaven, creator of the universe, all powerful, almighty, all knowing is our helper! What could you do for God if you truly believed that? What freedoms would come into your life if you just believed God is with you? Well, he is, and he offers you all the help you could ever need to accomplish his will in your life. Be confident!
