2:26 Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.
The missionary had been in jail for more than 2 weeks. He was stuck behind bars in a Kosovo prison because he had tried to tell others about Jesus Christ.
Other missionaries tried to negotiate for his freedom, but day after day they were turned down. Eventually they received the good news that their friend would soon be released, so they went to the jail to tell him.
The missionaries discovered that their friend had been witnessing to his fellow inmates, and when they told him that he was about to be let out of jail, he said, "No, not yet. Give me another week. I need more time to share the gospel with these people."
The missionary could have sat in his cell and sulked. He could have turned bitter against God for allowing him to be jailed. Instead, he got to work showing what his faith was made out of. Mere prison bars could not contain his spirit, and they definitely could not deprive him of the joy of putting his faith to work.
We all have daily choices about whether our faith is alive or dead. How do we know if it is alive? Faith that is living produces good work. Faith that is dead does nothing. How is your faith? Is it living and putting in the work, or is it dead and just lying there?
