John 4:4 He had to go through Samaria on the way.
Jesus left Judea and was on his way to Galilee. Today’s verse is interesting because he didn’t have to go through Samaria. There were a couple of others paths to take. Many devout Jews hated the Samaritans so much that they avoided Samaria altogether. Yet here is Jesus not just going through Samaria, but feeling it was a must.
Once he got to Samaria he sat at the well and began speaking to a Samaritan woman, who was amazed that a Jew would speak to her. Not only did Jesus speak to her, he told her things about her life that he couldn’t have known. The woman was changed by her encounter with Jesus. The clincher was when Jesus told her about living water:
John 4:13-14 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
For years I have called encounters like these “Divine Appointments.” As Christians we should be on the lookout for situations that God places us in to be the right voice at the right time. We have a well of living water to offer the thirsty people we meet!
