Hebrews 4:1 God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it.
Bob is in a quandary. He has an opportunity to go see his football team play on Sunday. Right as he was pulling the trigger on the tickets, he got a call from a buddy with tickets to a concert by a band he has been wanting to see forever. What to do?
There are only 8 home games for his NFL team, and they are playing the previous year’s champions, so it should be a great game. If he goes to the concert he will miss an awesome game.
On the other hand, he has wanted to see Joe Gofarnapolous and the Go-Fars since he was a kid. Joe is getting older now, and this may be his last tour.
An amazing game or a great concert? What to do? Joe is so afraid of missing either of them that he loses the tickets to the concert and the game both.
In the old days we used to call this “the paralysis of analysis.” Now it is called FOMO, the fear of missing out. FOMO is especially exacerbated by social media. It used to be you just heard the stories later, but now you can check your InstaTwitFace and see in real time what you missed.
Concerts and games come and go, but our biggest FOMO should be missing out on God’s salvation and blessings. God offers us rest from the sin that hurts us. He offers us rest from the trials and tribulations of this life. And he offers us an eternal life with him. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on all that!
