Mark 8:4
His disciples replied, “How are we supposed to find enough food to feed them out here in the wilderness?”
Do you remember where you were when you learned about 9/11? I can remember that day vividly.
Do you remember the Space Shuttle crashing? I do.
Do you remember what you had for lunch on February 17, 2022? Probably not.
We tend to forget things that don’t have any real significance in our lives. Seminal moments, like 9/11 and the Space Shuttle stick out because of their significance.
You would think that the disciples would have remembered what they had for lunch on February 17 29 AD. That was (or could have been, you don’t know either) the day that the disciples took part in an incredible miracle. On that day (okay, it could have been a different date), they helped Jesus distribute five loaves of bread and a couple of sardines, and feed 5,000 men! They even had leftovers!
I don’t know about you, but I am pretty sure that is a lunch I would remember!
Having witnessed, and even participated in that miracle, how is it that when the same situation arose not too much later, the disciples were as befuddled as they were the first time?
They forgot! They forgot watching bread and fish just keep miraculously appearing in baskets. They forgot how exciting it was to be the first Oprah, “You get a fish, and you get a fish…”
We can’t be too harsh on the guys, though. We forget about the blessings of God all the time. We run into situations where we should remember God’s previous faithfulness, and we forget all he has done for us. That is one of the reasons our prayer time should include heavy doses of thankfulness for all God has done in us, and because of who God is. That should keep us from being forgetful.
