Giants and Grasshoppers
Numbers 13:33 We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”
The Israelite scouts had a simple mission: go check out the land that God had promised them. Not hinted might be theirs, not said “Well, maybe…” He promised them the land of Canaan!
For forty days they scouted the land and found out it was exactly as God had said, a promised land. There’s that promise word again. They found all kinds of food there, including grapes that took two men to carry. Try finding grapes that big at Walmart, you can’t! The crowd listening said, “Ooooooo!”
Then came that fateful word: but.
The land is fruitful, but giants live there. We felt like grasshoppers! The crowd murmured.
These were people who were freed from captivity, who saw a sea part, followed a cloud by day and fire by night. These were people who ate bread that fell from the sky! And yet, on the edge of the Promised land they got scared! Right on the doorstep of blessings, they caved in.
Don’t give up on God’s promises! They are as true today as they were then. Whatever you do, don’t give up on the doorstep of your blessing.
