God’s Economy
Luke 17:33 If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.
The CEO of Megacorp walked into the shareholder’s meeting and went to the podium. After the obligatory squealing of feedback had subsided, he cleared his throat and began. “Good morning, Board of Directors and shareholders. As you know, we made record profits last year.
In fact,” he cleared his throat, “we made too much money.” Audible gasps rippled through the crowd.
“So I have decided to give all of our profits away so we can make more. None of you will receive bonuses or dividends this year…” Before he could begin his next sentence the crowd rushed onto the stage with malice in their hearts and deadly intentions in their hands.
What kind of leader would do that? Nobody on Wall Street today would stand for it! That’s not how our economy works.
God’s economy is different, though. In God’s Kingdom we are asked to give up our lives to save them. And that’s not all! We are commanded to,love our enemies, turn the other cheek, forgive seventy times seven, and pray for those who hurt us.
In short, God’s Kingdom doesn’t make any sense! Why should we do all of that, and more? Because God’s Kingdom has both eternal life, and it promises a better life down here, too.
Sure, God’s way of doing things isn’t easy. In fact, it’s impossible! We can only enter God’s kingdom
by giving up our own. Once we do, we find that God has power, grace and mercy available to us so we can follow his way of doing things.
God’s economy is way different than ours, but its dividends are hard to beat!
