Ezekiel 18:21-22 But if wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my decrees and do what is just and right, they will surely live and not die. All their past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done.
In 1982 Michael McDonald released the incredible song, “I Keep Forgettin’.” The chorus says:
I keep forgettin' we're not in love anymore
I keep forgettin' things will never be the same again
I keep forgettin' how you made that so clear
I keep forgettin'
Like many cheap writers I am going to rip off Michael McDonald’s lyrics and rewrite them.
He keeps forgettin’ what you did before
He keeps forgettin’ all the things that held you back
He keeps trying to make it so clear that
He keeps forgettin’
If we have turned away from our sins and asked God to forgive us, he forgets our sin. And when God forgets something, it is long gone. So why do we keep rehashing our past? Why do we keep dragging the sins of yesterday along the path of freedom that God is trying to lead us down?
There are two reasons: the devil wants to rob the joy of our present by showing us our past; and we have been forgiven by God, but we can’t forgive ourselves.
The solution for both reasons is the same. Lay your sins at God’s feet and leave them there. Then, as you walk away cleansed and renewed, every time that sins come up just say, “Nope, that sin is forgiven and long forgotten, keep moving!”
There is victory for us over our past because He keeps forgettin’. You need to forget, too.
