John 6:63
The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
There are some people who think they are able to earn God’s blessings and salvation. They carry a ten-pound family Bible when they go to church, wear a cross made out of railroad spikes around their neck, and help little old ladies across the street. They do all of this hoping that God will somehow notice their good works and decide they can go to heaven.
Sorry, Sparky, that ain’t the way to heaven. The Bible and the cross necklace sound really heavy, and based on the little old ladies I see in campgrounds, they don’t need your help crossing the street. That doesn’t mean those are wrong things to do, they just won’t buy you salvation and right-standing with God.
As today’s verse says, our human efforts accomplish nothing, but the words of Christ give us life. You can only get to heaven by following Christ. Buddha can’t do it for you, Mohammed can’t do it for you, and Gladys, the lady on the corner, can’t do it for you. Only Jesus.
Quit trying to earn the salvation that has been freely offered to you. Jesus paid the debt for you on the cross. You can’t win it, or earn it, and you certainly don’t deserve it, you can only accept it and follow Him.
