He’s Alive!
We’re all tired. Most of us haven’t slept since Friday. We are huddled in a dark room, hungry and scared, expecting the Roman soldiers or the Jewish leaders to track us down and kill us like they killed Jesus. This room stinks of perspiration and fear.
Peter has spent of the time weeping in a corner. I don’t blame him, if I had betrayed Jesus like he did, I would feel the same way.
Suddenly, there is a banging on the door! This is it! They are here to take us prisoner and kill us! A shiver runs down my body as I remember how they beat Jesus. Is that what awaits me? I hope I can endure it with as much grace as he did.
Wait, it’s not soldiers, it is Mary Magdalene. She is banging on the door and screaming some gibberish at the top of her lungs. If the soldiers didn’t know where we were before, they know now.
We finally get her to take a breath, and she blurts out, ““They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
While the others mumble in disbelief, Peter and I run out of the room and head for the tomb. I’m faster than Peter, so I beat him there. He will never admit this, by the way…
I stooped down and looked into the tomb, then brash, bold Peter walked right in. He stood there, puzzled. We were expecting the smell of decaying flesh, but there is nothing in this room but a wadded-up mass of grave clothes!
I went in and suddenly it all hit me! His words begin to flash through our minds. “I will rebuild the temple in three days…” “I go to prepare a place for you…”
He’s alive! John and I embraced, screaming like madmen! Suddenly, it all made sense. Of course, the soldiers couldn’t keep Him down. What is death to the Son of God? I watched Him raise people from the dead, of course He would rise again. We are REALLY going to do some great things now!
This is going to change everything! No more cowering in some dark room, afraid of the soldiers or Chief Priest. Let them come find me! I’ll tell them what I have plainly seen; you thought you killed him, but he’s alive!
