Humble Brags
Galatians 6:3 If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.
A person is served an amazing seven course meal. She tells her host, “That was the best food I ever ate.” The host answers, “That? It’s just something I threw together…”
A woman gets complimented on her dress, and she says, “What, this old thing?”
We call those “humble brags.” A humble brag is meant to act like we are playing down something we are proud of, while actually bringing more attention to it.
Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir was fond of telling people, “Don’t be so humble- you’re not that great.”
Today’s verse deals along the same lines.
“I would love to help people meet Jesus, but they won’t hear it from someone as accomplished as me.”
“Pastor, I would love to do kid’s ministry, but I feel like my voice needs to be in the congregation for worship.”
And yes, I have actually heard those excuses. If you think you are too important to help others, you are fooling yourself. My Grandpa used to say, “Nobody can lie to you like you can lie to you.”
So how about we drop the humble brags and start serving in true humility? There is a lost and dying world out there that needs you, and you are not too important to help them.
