I Did It My Way!
Genesis 16:2 So Sarai said to Abram, “The LORD has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have children through her.” And Abram agreed with Sarai’s proposal.
One of Frank Sinatra’s most believed songs is, ‘I Did It My Way.’ It has become an anthem for those who had it rough, but kept going and showed grit and determination. Great song, bad way to do God’s will!
God had promised Abram (soon to be Abraham) that he would give Abram descendants. After chuckling a bit, Abram believed.
His wife, Sarai (soon to be Sarah) believed, too. However, Sarai got impatient. In today’s verse she decided that she would give God some help, and cooked up the solution of giving Hagar, her servant, to Abram to have a baby. Abram, being a man, said, “No, I couldn’t… okay!”
Bad idea, bad execution, really bad result.
It’s always that way when we try do God’s things our way. Anybody who knows me will tell you that if you look up the word patient in the dictionary my picture will not appear. I get in a hurry, I get restless, I push. None of those things are helpful.
I have been trying to learn to be patient and wait on God’s solution and God’s timing. It ain’t easy, but it is best.
What are you impatient about? Don’t look for ways to “help God.” Wait for his timing and his solution. It will be a LOT better than anything you or I cook up on our own.
Learning to wait… Jerry
