Hebrews 6:18-19 So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.
On August 12, 2000, the largest submarine in the Russian fleet, named the Kursk, suffered an internal explosion and went down in 350 feet of water in the Barents Sea. 118 men were aboard.
Deep sea divers went down to assess the situation and to determine if anyone had survived. As they were circling the ship deep beneath the sea, they heard a pinging sound and began to listen more closely.
What they were hearing was a type of Morse Code coming from some of the men in the sub. The divers deciphered the code, which turned out to be a simple question: “Is there any hope?”
So many people today are looking for hope. For many, life is just a drag and a drudgery. They look to the government, money, and all kinds of other things, but nothing, and no one, delivers true, lasting hope.
In today’s verses we are given the ultimate hope: God has promised to be our refuge, and since God cannot lie, that hope can help us today and in eternity. The concept of refuge goes back to the Old Testament where a man who accidentally murdered someone could flee to a City of Refuge and be safe from anybody wanting revenge. God instituted the concept, and it holds true for us today, too.
Whatever you have done, whatever sins you have committed, God offers you refuge and hope. Put your trust in Him and feel the grace, peace, and hope he offers.
