It’s Not FAIR!
Acts 25:7 When Paul arrived, the Jewish leaders from Jerusalem gathered around and made many serious accusations they couldn’t prove.
Every parent has heard the following phrase, usually through tears and at high volume; “IT’S NOT FAIR!” Stamping of feet, icy glares, and occasionally rolling around on the ground as if being electrocuted are all optional, but may be included, per the temperament of each individual child.
The fairness, or lack thereof, usually revolves around something the child does or doesn’t want to do. The problem can be anything from not wanting to eat spinach all the way up to various piercings and choice of friends.
The whole trial of Paul here is unfair. The Jewish leaders made serious accusations, but couldn’t back them up. The leaders were so unsure of their plans that they conspired to waylay Paul as he was being moved back to Jerusalem.
The bottom line is that life is not always fair in this fallen world. The Bible is filled with stories of unfair things that happened to good people. Johannes Jonsson said, "The life as a Christian is not always a dance on roses. We live in an evil world with lots of misery and problems. Sooner or later things happen, when we wonder, why is this happening, and why is it happening to me?"
Paul knew how unfair it all was. He also knew that God is a God of love and justice. If God is in control, everything turns out for our good. Not always the way we want it, but for our good. He would write to the church in Rome, Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
So the next time you want to stamp your feet and scream remember that if God is in control, it will work out for the best. If he isn’t in control, you’re toast anyway!
