Job 34:7-8
“Tell me, has there ever been a man like Job, with his thirst for irreverent talk? He chooses evil people as companions. He spends his time with wicked men.
If you are old like me, you probably remember the TV show Dragnet. It was great!
Every week, Sgt Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan) would do everything possible to solve crime for the LAPD. Friday and Gannon investigated everything from strong arm holdups to hit and run homicides. My favorite part of each episode was when Friday would speak to a witness. If they got off track, like they always seemed to, he would tell them, “Just the facts.”
Just the facts. When we are speaking to someone about their lives, it is important that we do just that. Job’s “friend,” Elihu, evidently never saw Dragnet. His attack of Job in our passage today steers far from facts and gets into Elihu filling in blanks that don’t concern him and aren’t true.
Stick to the facts when you are talking to someone who is hurting or struggling. Be a comfort, a loving voice of correction, if needed, and show compassion to them. You’ll be amazed at the places and times God can use you if you do.
