Know It Alls
1 Corinthians 8:2 Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.
One of my favorite teachers from high school was the late Lyle Brown. Mr. Brown was my drama teacher and was always good for a quick one-liner. When I asked him why he talked to himself he answered, “Mr. Godsey, that’s the only way I can get an intelligent conversation around here.”
Mr. Brown tried his best to convince me that God was a woman named Beulah Mae, and even signed my yearbook, “You will go far, Beulah Mae told me so!”
One of my favorite quotes from Mr. Brown is one that I used often when I taught school, “Those of you who think you know everything are annoying those of us who actually do.”
When I read today’s verse I immediately thought of Mr. Brown. I wish I could have quoted it to him as a rebuttal! Alas, it was not to be.
We all run across braggarts who try to impress us with their knowledge. What’s funny is that they are often just flat out wrong. A little humility would go a long way for them.
There is an old adage that says, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” I would rather be remembered as a caring person than a brilliant one. I would rather show you Christ’s love than my intelligence. Christ’s love can change your life, my “intelligence” may just get you into trouble. I’ll stick with showing love!
