Luke 5:3
Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.
It has been a long night of fishing. I worked my fingers to the bone and didn’t catch a single fish. It was so bad last night I couldn’t catch a cold!
My fishing partners and I were cleaning out nets when Jesus stepped into my boat. He asked me to row him out a ways so he could keep preaching. I was going to tell him no, but something spurred me on.
Then Jesus told me to go back out, into the deeper water and let down our nets. “Lord,” I said, “we worked hard all night and didn’t catch anything. But if you ask me to, I give it a try…” It doesn’t hurt to humor the guy, I guess. Who knows? Maybe I’ll catch a fish for breakfast.
Suddenly, my nets were so full that they started to tear! I cried out for my partners to come help, and soon both of our boats are more fully loaded than they have ever been!
Until this morning I had never met Jesus, and I almost didn’t do what he asked me to. I’m so glad I didn’t listen to the doubting, stubborn side of me. I may have just met him, but I know that for the rest of my life I will do whatever he asks. He just talked to me about “fishing for men.” I wonder what that’s all about…
