Let’s Get Salty!
Luke 14:34-35 “Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”
I’ll be honest, for a long time this verse baffled me. We have had canisters of salt in our cupboards forever. Have you ever poured out the salt in your house and said, “This salt has gone bad!” Me neither.
We go down to the grocery store and shell out a whopping $1.43 for a box of Morton’s Iodized Salt. I know it is hard to believe, but there was no Vons or Market Basket in Jerusalem back then.
Salt was so vital that Roman soldiers were often paid in salt, their salarium. We get our word salary from salarium. Salt from different places had different tastes. Pliny the Elder has a whole chapter of his histories devoted to different salts and the joy of them!
Our table salt is not what is referred to here. The salt that Jesus spoke of was totally different. Salt was a big deal, and it would go bad. It would lose its flavor and become worthless. There was nothing you could do with bad salt but throw it away.
Jesus spoke of salt after talking about counting the cost of following him. Don’t start, then stop. You must stay with him all the way through your life. If you decide to follow Christ today, then walk away, you have lost your saltiness.
Maybe that describes you today. You used to follow Christ with your whole being, but over the years you have slowly lost your saltiness. The good thing is that unlike salt, your life and walk with Christ can be renewed. Let’s get salty!
