1 John 3:4 Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God.
For years I made a living knowing laws:
California 245 pc “Assault with a deadly weapon”
California 187 pc “Murder”
California 459 pc “Burglary”
And there are a ton more! Do you know what most of those laws have in common? They are willful acts. A person robs, murders, or assaults someone because they chose to do it. It’s the willful choices to do wrong that get us.
It’s the same idea with God’s laws. When we willfully break God’s laws there are penalties. We know we shouldn’t lie, cheat, or steal, and most of us stay away from those. Hopefully you haven’t murdered or assaulted anybody today. But what about the “little” sins? Well, we call them little, God just calls them sin.
You know, sins like gossip, slander, anger or unforgiveness. Those sins are just as damning and hurtful to us, to God, and to the people around us as the “major” sins.
John also says in verse 6, Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is.
Big sins or little sins, we need to avoid them all!
