Matthew 7:3-5
“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
I have a pretty vivid imagination, so when I read today’s passage I can picture some guy with a log sticking four or five feet out of his eye trying to do simple tasks.
If you call his name and he has to turn around, when he turns his dead the log hits people standing around him like a Marx Brothers movie.
When he drives, he has to tip his head far back because the log hits the windshield.
He’s always complaining about people staring at him. Well, at least the people he can see on his logless side.
And I can imagine this guy trying to help me get a speck of dust out of my eye. His log keeps hitting me in the head, so he tells me to quit squirming. Finally, I decide I would rather live with the speck than let this guy “help” me anymore.
The lesson here is pretty plain. Take the log out, then come help me, dude! We find it so easy to judge others, and totally ignore the sin in our own lives. Before you look too harshly at someone else and pass judgement, let’s take some time and see if there is a log we need to address first. That should take care of our judging pretty quickly!
