Mud Football
1 Corinthians 6:11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
During finals week at Southern California College (now Vanguard University) they decided to let everyone blow off some steam. The answer: a huge mud football game!
They flooded one of the athletic fields and let us go crazy. After about 10 minutes the field had become a swamp. We were slipping and sliding, running and falling (mostly falling) and getting filthy. It was a blast!
We tried to get as much loose mud off of us as we could before we entered the dorms. I think a fire hose was involved…
Once we got back to our quad I took a long, hot shower. I was so sore that I actually took the plastic chair from my desk and just sat on it in the shower. Once I was done soaking it felt so good to be clean again!
That describes the act of salvation. We come to God sore from our life, made filthy by the sin that we have allowed to control us. Then God cleans us all up. He heals our wounds, and gives our hearts a clean slate, free from sin.
And we were all like that. Romans 3:23 says, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” It doesn’t matter how good you think you are, or how many little old ladies you have helped across the street, we are all sinful before we let Jesus clean us up.
So come to God. Let him clean you up and heal your wounds, your hurts, your insecurities. He has so much more for your life!
