New Wine, New Life
Luke 5:8
New wine must be stored in new wineskins.
At this time of year a lot of people are trying to make major changes in their lives. They are going on diets, giving up smoking, trying to read their Bible more, etc.
Those are good things. But if they don’t make some behavioral changes, these endeavors won’t last long.
You can’t lose weight if your house is full of Twinkies and Doritos. Believe me, I know.
You can’t give up smoking if you still have a pack of cigarettes on the coffee table in the living room.
No, we have to change our whole lives, and that means making a clean sweep.
Wine was made in leather wineskins. As they aged they became shriveled up and hard. New wine couldn’t be put in these old wineskins. The process of fermentation would burst them. You needed a new wineskin for new wine.
In today’s passage that is exactly wheat Jesus is talking about. When we accept Christ as savior, he wants to expand in our lives. Every aspect of our lives is made better by accepting him. But if we are expecting that new, expanding life to live in our old, crusty, dried up life we had before Jesus, it won’t work.
Take a look at your attitudes, your ways of thinking, and your day to day life. Read your Bible, pray for yourself and others, let God expand in your daily life.
