John 9:6-7
Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes. He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!
As Jesus and the disciples are walking one day, they see a man born blind on the side of the road. The disciples ask if the man’s sin or his parents’ sin caused the blindness. Jesus told them, neither, that man was blind to show the glory of God.
Jesus knelt down, spit in the dirt, and rubbed the mud on the man’s eyes. Then he told the man, “Go wash in the pool of Siloam.”
The man asked Jesus, “Have you done any clinical trials on this mud application you are using? I’d really like to see some double-blind testing (no pun intended) before I put much stock in this cure.”
No, that’s not the way it happened. The man obeyed, and went down to the pool and washed the spit-mud off of his eyes. Instantly, the man could see!
Did you notice the steps? The man obeyed, then received his sight. So many times, we ask God for things, and his response is to go wash. Rather than immediately obey, we look for rationales to help us understand. The blind man didn’t understand, and he had no reason to obey, but his simple act of obedience changed his life for the better.
What is God asking you to do? You may not understand it, it may seem crazy, like letting him smear spit-mud on your eyes. Whatever it is, God wants you to obey and see. Don’t get the steps out or order: obey, then see. The greatest blessing of you life may just be on the other side of obedience.
