Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
I used to weigh 430 pounds. That’s right, 430 pounds. I looked like a continent in Nike tennis shoes. I was so fat my blood type was Ragu. The back of my neck looked like a package of hot dogs. When I sat around the house, I sat AROUND the house. I can tell fat jokes forever, I got a million of ‘em, I’ve heard them all.
One thing that used to bug me was tags that said, “One Size Fits All.” My experience is that it doesn’t. For example, a rain poncho that says that it fits all. Nope. When I tried it on, it looked like 20 pounds of manure packed into a 5 pound bag. Now they think they are being cagey by saying, “One Size Fits Most.”
We love “one size fits all” solutions, don’t we? The one I hear a lot is today’s verse. If something bad happens to people, we hold their hand in support and say, “Well, all things work together for good…”
Nope. That verse ain’t a one size fits all.
The verse says that things work together for the good of “those who love God and are called according to his purpose.” That is a big limiting factor. That is not one size fits all, or even one size fits most.
If you aren’t in relationship with God, sorry, that verse doesn’t apply to you. And Christians need to stop using it to help people who aren’t Christians deal with bad things. That may sound harsh, but you are setting them up for answers and blessings that aren’t coming.
All things work together for good because God promises Christians it will.
