Our Mighty God!
Psalms 24:8. Who is the King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty; the LORD, invincible in battle.
Super Bowl LVII is done. This morning the Kansas City Chiefs will have their victory parade, and then a period of mourning will settle in for football fans all over the world.
In football we use a lot of battle metaphors. They are not just teammates, they are brothers in arms. It’s not just a game, it is a battle between two foes. Some people, who have obviously never been in a real battle, will call the games a battle. In the end, one team wins and another team loses.
Las Vegas posts odds on who will win and who will lose. It’s easy to see when a bad team (like my Bears this year) plays a really good team (like the Chiefs or Eagles), the odds reflect who the bettors think will win. There are occasional upsets, where a team wins a game it shouldn’t have been able to win, and we all love it. Unless your team was favored to win and lost, then the refs were surely the reason…
God has never lost a battle. The Psalmist calls him “invincible.” The Oxford dictionary defines invincible as “one who is too powerful to be defeated or overcome.”
Do you see God that way? Oh sure, you believe God will defeat the devil, but what about the battles in your life? Do you believe God is invincible against your day-to-day battles?
It is so easy to have faith in the future. We know God will overcome in the end. We can look back to the past and see that God has been victorious in our lives. What about today? It is much harder to trust God when the battle rages all around us. We get sick, we have trouble in our families, we have too much week left when this week’s money has run out. In those times it is hard to see God working, but he is. He is battling for you, and he has never lost.
So take heart today, your Heavenly Father is standing in front of you, battling for you. Quit trying to work things out on your own. You can be defeated, but God can’t, so put your trust in him. You may not see the end, or what good can come from your struggles, but God sees it all, and he is mighty!
