Mark 15:15
So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
Pilate didn’t find any fault in Jesus. In fact, Pilate knew that Jesus was only arrested because the Jewish leaders were jealous.
So, if you don’t believe he is guilty of anything, and you know the motives of his accusers are suspect, why order him flogged and turned over to be crucified? He wanted to pacify the crowd.
Pilate was more concerned with what the crowd thought than what was right or wrong. He was willing to sacrifice the life of an innocent man rather than sacrifice any of his standing.
Before we talk too much smack about Pilate, let’s examine our own hearts. How many times have we been silent about our faith, or allowed something wrong to happen around us because we were afraid to make a stand for Christ, or it would be uncomfortable?
We can’t be pacifiers, we need to be identifiers. We must identify ourselves with Christ in front of our friends, our families, and our communities. When we worry too much about our pride or ego, we hurt the people around us who need Christians to be identifiers, not pacifiers.
