Mark 4:38
Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
The storm was raging! Even the experienced fishermen were freaking out. This could be the big one, the one that killed them all!
And Jesus was asleep.
Asleep without a care in the world. They were all going to die, and Jesus was just going to sleep right through it. He must not have loved them like they thought he did. You can’t say you love someone and then take a nap while they are killed, can you?
What always strikes me when I read this passage is that the disciples didn’t think or know that Jesus could do anything about the storm, they just wanted him to freak out like they were. When Jesus did calm the storm, they were terrified he could!
It is important we know that God isn’t in heaven freaking out over our disasters. We get so shook up by the things going on in our lives, and we don’t think God is even aware or cares. Here’s an idea: instead of freaking out, how about asking God to calm the storm and see you through it? Once you realize that God is in control, not you, you can have peace even though the storm rages around you.
