Acts 12:6-7
The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate. Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists.
Have you ever stayed up all night, worrying about what the next day would bring? Or maybe you fretted and fussed about something that has happened, and you just can’t get past it.
I have done both! And neither of them helped. I like Peter’s response to trouble in today’s verses.
Herod Agrippa has had John’s brother James, put to the sword and killed. Like a two-year-old performing a trick, he decided to do it again because people liked it. So, Peter gets locked up. The night before his trial, which will, no doubt, end in his death, Peter is asleep. Asleep! No pacing, no fingernail chewing, no begging God for mercy. Nope, dude is sleeping soundly. So soundly, in fact, that when the Angel comes to bust him out of the joint, he has to whack Peter in the side to wake him up!
I think Peter was able to sleep on a stressful night because he knew God was going to take care of him. Whatever the next day held, God was going to be by Peter’s side and see him through.
Are you stressed? Give it to God and get some sleep, God has got this!
