1 John 1:6-7 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
I saw a t-shirt once that said, “The older I get the better I was.” You know who am talking about. A guy who barely played in Little League has somehow become a man in his 40’s who hit mammoth dingers and turned down a pro contract when he was 13 because “I wanted to focus on school.” He wasn’t too good at school, either…
Many people have been attributed the quote, “If you tell a lie often enough it becomes the truth.” There are even studies that suggest that the more often you tell a lie you begin to believe it yourself, that your mind thinks of it as history in your life.
Today’s verse is calling us to be honest about our lives, our relationships with others, and our relationship with God. We lie to ourselves when we say we love and follow God, but live a lifestyle that is exactly the opposite. My theology professor, Rev. Ronald White, said, “We professing theists, but we live like atheists.”
It’s time to make sure our walk and our talk line up. To quote the famous philosopher, my Grandpa Bill Brewer, “Nobody can lie to you like you can lie to you.” So quit lying!
