1 Corinthians 12:17
If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?
The quarterback calls the play in the huddle, “Trips Right Fly X Counter Zip on two.” At the snap of the ball the three wide receivers are supposed to fly straight down the field. They know they aren’t going to get the ball, they are a diversion to clear out a space of the ball carrier.
The running back is supposed to take one step right, then quickly pivot left where the quarterback hands him the ball. The offensive linemen are all pulling to the right, so the defense goes right while the ball carrier goes left. It is a perfect play.
Well, it is perfect if everybody does their job. If the running back, linemen, receivers, or quarterback decide to freelance and do their own thing, disaster can happen. Imagine if one of the offensive linemen decided that his talents were being wasted by the coach by simply blocking. To show the coach how valuable he is, instead of blocking, he goes over and takes the ball from the quarterback and takes off running! Take it from a big man who played on the line, there’s a reason we weren’t playing running back!
Even though the players all have different responsibilities, they all have one goal: win the game by executing their roles perfectly. The fast running back is going to be more successful following a big lineman who is pancaking guys on the way to the end zone.
As Christians, we all need to have the same goal: we must execute our responsibilities for God at the highest level possible. We do that by keeping our eyes on God, not trying to do our own thing. We can’t all be preachers, but we can all be who God calls us to be. My Grandpa Brewer used to tell me, “Bloom where you are planted.”
So, if you are a foot, quit trying to be an eye. And if you’re an eye, quit trying to be a pancreas. Fulfill the role God has called you to and watch the victories He gives you, your church, and the community around you.
