Refuge
Psalms 16:1
A psalm of David.
Keep me safe, O God, for I have come to you for refuge.
When the exclusive Greenbrier Inn began adding to its facility, nobody really took much interest. It was just another facility adding on and expanding.
What nobody knew was that more than just hotel rooms were being added. The Eisenhower administration was actually building a fortified bunker beneath the inn as a place of refuge for the members of Congress in the case of a nuclear attack.
The bunker was 720 feet underground and had enough food and facilities for the members of Congress and staff. It was finished in 1962, and only a select few knew.
In 1992 a reporter exposed the bunker to the public. Since it was no longer secret, the bunker was abandoned, having never been used.
In today’s passage, David says God is his shelter. His refuge. His strength. That same shelter is available to us, and not just in times of trouble. The million dollar question is: are we using it?
Are we going to God every day to find rest, safety and strength? It is available to you, and it is as near as a prayer.
Don’t let it go unused…
