Luke 4:18-19
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.”
In his novels The Trial and The Castle, Franz Kafka (1883–1924) portrays life as a dehumanizing existence that turns people into a sea of empty faces without identity or worth. Kafka said, “The conveyer belt of life carries you on, no one knows where. One is more of an object, a thing, than a living creature.”
In our passage today, Jesus tells the crowd, “I have come to release you from a nothing existence! I came to give you life, release you from your bondage, heal your sight, and heal your bruises!”
We don’t have to be worn down by this world. Life doesn’t have to grind us up and spit us out. Christ offers us more! A better life, and not just in heaven! Jesus said in John 10:10, “ I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Kafka’s description of a dehumanizing, faceless world doesn’t have to be true for us. Following Jesus releases us and gives us an abundant life!
