Luke 19:40
He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!”
Throughout my years of ministry, I was fortunate to be asked to preach in different churches. For some strange reason, I was usually only asked once, with no return visits requested. I’m not not sure what to make of that…
Anyway, it’s amazing how varied churches can be, even within the same denomination. Some of the churches were rollicking Pentecostal churches, some of the same denomination sat on their hands the whole service.
I spoke in a couple of African American churches, and they were awesome! The organist would play little riffs as I spoke. I didn’t have the rhythm to make it pay off, but it was cool!
The hardest churches to speak in are the dead ones. They are merely going through the motions of church, not feeling any emotions from what they are hearing. I use a lot of humor when I speak, and some churches like it, some churches don’t. I’ve spoken in churches that were so dry that I took a quick glance below the pulpit to make sure I wasn’t at a funeral. No, funerals were more fun.
Those dead churches need to read today’s verse. The Pharisees are upset about the raucous praise of the people following Jesus, so they complained to him. He said to leave them alone, because if they stopped praising, the rocks would start singing praises. Now THAT would be a rock band!
If you have lost the joy and emotion of your salvation, you need to get it back. Pray like David did in Psalms 51:12: Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.
If you don’t do that, you may want to go check your garden. The rocks may be taking your place in God’s choir of praise!
Today’s Readings: Esther 9,10; Luke 19
