2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.
An old farmer was looking for a hired hand. The only problem was that the farm land was on the coast of the Atlantic. Storms in that area are intense, and often deadly. Farmhand after farmhand turned him down.
Finally, a short middle-aged man took the job. The farmer asked him, “How do you handle storms?” The man replied, “I can sleep through storms.” The farmer thought the reply was odd, but hired the man.
Everything was going great, the man was always busy at the farm. One night, a huge storm broke out. The farmer rushed to the farmhand’s room and found him fast asleep. Screaming at him, the farmer yelled, “You can’t sleep now, a storm is coming! We have to cover and protect the farm.”
The farmhand merely mumbled, “No, sir, I told you: I can sleep through the storm.” Enraged by the old man’s response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away.
If we have accepted Christ, and are living for Him, we are safe in the storms of life. As we daily pray and spend time with God, we are preparing for the next storm that blows our way. Storms are inevitable, so we must prepare for them diligently daily.
If we are prepared through Christ, we can truly live the old adage that says, “Sometimes the Lord calms the storm. Sometimes he lets the storm rage and calms his child.”
