John 8:31-32
Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
President James A. Garfield said, “The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable.”
I hear so many people today talking about “living their truth,” but their truth isn’t truth at all. As my Grandpa Brewer so eloquently put it, “Nobody can lie to you like you can lie to you.”
The sad truth is that the truth has a tendency to knock us around before it sets us free. My personal theory is that truth is here to knock off all of the junk, gunk, and detritus that keep us from fully believing in God.
Facing God’s truth isn’t easy. It shows us things about our lives that do not belong, attitudes and unforgiveness that keep us back, and areas where we Don’t measure up to God’s standards. All of that is painful to face.
The end product of getting knocked around by truth is freedom. Freedom from hurting ourselves and others, and freedom from hurting God. As you read your Bible ask God to allow his truth to shine its light into the deepest caverns of your life and show you areas that need attention. It may hurt at first, it may make you mad, but it will definitely lead to freedom.
