Stay In Your Lane, Bro…
Galatians 6:4-5
Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.
In the last few years I have really gotten into Formula 1 racing. I love the speed, the intensity, the absolute insanity of driving 200 mph literally inches away from another car!
One thing I have noticed about Formula 1 that I don’t like is how much whining some of the drivers do while racing. You can hear the onboard radios as they communicate with their pits. They whine about someone breaking the track limits, or making a move they thought was unsafe. My favorite quote from one driver was that a competitor “is intimidating me…” Mind you, this wasn’t during an argument in the paddock. It wasn’t a back alley brawl. They were driving at over 150 miles an hour next to each other! That should be intimidating enough without whinging about somebody else.
Our verses today tell us to pay attention to our own work instead of worrying about everybody else. If you take satisfaction from doing your own work well, you won’t have to compare yourself to anyone else. You are responsible for you, not Bob from accounting.
It’s the same way with our behavior. If we concentrate on behaving correctly, we won’t have time to be offended by things other people do. Again, you are responsible for your conduct, not judging them for theirs. You will be more productive, less critical, and happier.
As a TV commercial so eloquently put it, “Stay in your lane, bro…” That’s good advice for race car drivers and for us.
