Colossians 4:5-6 Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.
When I was a kid I knew that every time I went to the doctor he was going to take one of those wide Popsicle sticks and stick it in my mouth. Remember what they always said, “Stick out your tongue and say ahhhhh.” The Popsicle sticks never had any flavor to them, though…
I always thought the doctor was looking just at my throat. It turns out that he was also scoping out my tongue. According to Science Daily, “The tongue can betray signs of illness, which combined with other symptoms such as a cough, fever, presence of jaundice, headache or bowel habits, can help the physician offer a diagnosis.”
The tongue can be a sign of good or bad health, and not just physically. Our tongues can say a lot about us spiritually, too.
How do you speak to people, especially people who need Jesus? I know people who think it is their job to point out every sin a sinner makes, and dangle them like a hot dog over the fires of hell. Does that sound gracious? What is attractive about somebody condemning you that way?
Jesus didn’t speak to sinners about hell, he spoke to them about heaven. His words to people who were lost were full of grace and compassion. He saved the harsh talk of hell for the religious leaders who acted opposite of God’s word.
Make it a point for your conversation be gracious and attractive. Stick your tongue out so others can hear how good your spiritual health is!
