As the Book of Mark comes to a close, we find Jesus preparing for his crucifixion. Jesus, the miracle worker, the man of compassion, the Savior of the world, is about to be nailed to a cross.
And he knows it.
Let that sink in for a minute. Think of all the terrors that are about to happen. The scourging, the mocking, the beatings, the betrayal, the nails pounded through his flesh, all of it is a few hours away. The sacrificial lambs in the temple never knew what was going on. To them, it was just another day right up until the knife slit their throat. Jesus had seen crucifixions, he knew the pain and suffering he was about to endure.
And it scared him.
In the Garden of Gethsemane we see a man who has a choice to make, fulfill his purpose, or take the easy way out. He prays earnestly to his Father,
Mark 14:36 “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
We, too, face a choice every day. We can serve God or serve ourselves. We can choose to stay with God or run from him like the disciples did. We renew our commitment to Christ daily, hourly and by the second. How will you choose?
