Hebrews 11:1-2 Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation.
As we travel the country in our RV, my wife and I get to see many cool and new things. One of the things I am looking forward to is the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.many of my childhood idols are enshrined there: Dick Butkus, Ray Nitschke, Joe Namath, and many more.
Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame is a big deal. It means that during your playing career you were one of the best. As a kid I looked up to Dick Butkus. I copied his tackling style, I changed my number to 51, I even taped my fingers together like he did, although I have no idea why! I just knew he was my hero, and I wanted to emulate him.
The Bible also contains a Hall of Fame, well, a Hall of Faith. Our verses today kick off Hebrews chapter 11, which tells the story of people in the Bible who overcame adversity by their faith. They can serve to show us how faith works.
Sometimes, like Abraham, our faith can lead us out of our comfort zone.
Other times faith calls, like Moses, to stand up to a tyrant.
Our faith will even allow us to slay a giant with just a sling and a stone.
Faith is an incredible thing! Faith is the substance of things we can’t see with our eyes, but we feel in our hearts. And living by faith can earn us a great reputation, both here on the earth, and in heaven.
