John 1:5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb in 1879. Twenty-two years later, in 1901, one of the newfangled gadgets was hung and turned on in the Livermore, CA Fire Department. It’s still there, and still on. The old bulb has almost never been turned off in 122 years.
By today’s standards it should have burned out 852 times by now, yet the bulb continues to shine.
The light of Christ continues to shine in the darkness of this world. Nothing has been able to extinguish it. Over the years philosophers, rulers and tyrants have all tried to dim the light of Christ, and all have failed. They are dead, the light still shines.
Christ wants to shine a light into our lives, too. The light comes to sweep away the darkness that holds us back, enslaves us, and tries to destroy our lives. Just like the petty tyrants, darkness cannot extinguish God’s light, it shines on and on and on.
Take a moment and ask God to shine his light on your life. Ask him to show you areas where darkness has been allowed to creep in. Then let him get to work on those areas, dispelling the darkness, and making you brand new.
The light shines. Will you allow it to shine on you?
